On a cold dry day fourteen members, including a couple of new faces, met at the start of the Middlewood Way trail at Rose Hill station right next to the local authority recycling plant.
Good progress was made along the trail to Poynton Coppice where we joined the road and made our way in the direction of Pott Shrigley, a steep climb brought us to the West Parkgate entrance into Lyme Park. Passing through the gate a rough tough track ascends steeply eventually reaching another gate which gains entrance into the park. Skirting The Knott we descended to the cafe where coffee and cake were indulged, service in this cafe is notoriously slow.

Joining the road we made our way to Lane Ends. Turning right onto the Disley to Whaley Bridge road we reached the bridleway that descends steeply and passes through Diglee farm to Furness Vale. Passing over the level crossing we joined the Peak Forest canal to Whaley Bridge and onto the excellent Cafe 110 at Horwich End. In no time at all fourteen people were tucking into their meals, an incredible service and good food too.

As time was getting short it was decided to take the quickest route back to Rose Hill along the Peak Forest canal. Approaching Disley Eric got a puncture, some difficulty was experienced in carrying out the repair and just as it was about finished Simon said “my front tyres gone down”, another puncture.

After fixing puncture two we proceeded on our way again, however, after a short distance, James a young lad joining us for the first time also suffered a puncture, someone commented that the canal trust had been pruning the shrubbery. By the time this was fixed daylight was fading quickly.

Rapid progress was made back to Rose Hill before daylight finally faded.

An excellent day out in good company despite the time lost through the activities of the canal trust.

Thanks to Grayham Simpson for the ride report.
