A valiant six turned up at the lower end of Snittle Road at Hade Edge two miles south of Holmfirth on an overcast but dry and windless Sunday morning. Sadly Roger our lead rider couldn’t make it, but as you will see we soldiered on. “Snittle?” I hear you ask, sorry, googled it, but no definition found, well, no polite ones. It could mean - A three quarter mile of crunchy, arrow straight, uneven uphill - because that’s what it is. At the top, where Snittle “Road” meets a crossroads, we headed right along Bare Bones Road and Linshaws Road on NCN Route 68. After another mile and a half we turned right onto Cartworth Moor Road, again like Snittle, arrow straight and not particularly roadish, but it did afford great views over Holmfirth and the Holme Valley towards Castle Hill. We then descended into Holmfirth along Dunsley track, Cartworth Road and Rotcher for elevenses at The Bloc Cafe.
P1040658loAfter perusing Roger’s route we headed off up out of Holmfirth along Station Road towards New Mill. After a few hundred yards we left the road and made our way down a bridleway which would have been part of the railway line from Holmfirth to Huddersfield - back in the day, before 1959 or 1965, depending on whether you were a passenger or freight. This brought us out on Miry Lane in Thongsbridge. Here we went right along until we joined a couple more cheeky little bridleways at the back of New Mill. Unfortunately, for one of our number the second one proved cheekier than expected and he took a tumble aggravating a knee which had been operated on.
P1040657loThe decision was taken that the ride should be curtailed as Glossop John didn’t feel confident in riding on. I was dispatched (being the local yokel) to fetch my car and bike rack, then it was off to Totties Garden Centre for tea, cake, sympathy and eventually some food before we all returned to Hade Edge for the finish.
Shame we didn’t do the whole ride, or find the elusive Maythorne Crosses, but there’ll be another time! Won’t there? Thanks to Roger who came up with the ride, hope you’re feeling well soon and John H who stepped up as lead rider in Roger’s absence and all who turned out John, John, John, Irene, Sol and Dave.
