A 50 mile route from Bellingham (cafes, shops), capital of the North Tyne, using a mixture of minor roads, forest tracks, bridleways and short sections of cycle routes 72, 68 and 10. Approximately 34% off-road. Outward through Wark Forest via Dally Castle, Chirdon Head and Churnsike Lodge. Minor roads via Butterburn and the Irthing valley to Spadeadam rocket range, Moscow and Gilsland (cafe, shops). Return via Greenhead bank, Hadrian's Wall, route 68 to Grindon Green and Whygate. Recorded elevation gain of approx. 4,100' in total. A great route around the wide open and empty lands on the border between Northumberland and Cumbria. |
