This 32 miles two-day ride starts at Bridge of Dee, east of Braemar, and partly follows the tracks of the Cairngorm Loop. Although some of the tracks/paths can easily be followed the terrain is, on the whole, pretty rough and, not surprisingly, rather hilly. And depending on the weather can be pretty muddy in places. Up to Faindouran bothy, near the river Avon and east of the Fords of Avon, most of the route is obvious but from Faindouran to the Fords of Avon refuge you have to find your own way, mostly if not all on two feet, be prepared! The refuge is a good point for an overnight stay, from here you have to walk most of the way west to where you can pick up the path along the river Nethy north of Loch Avon in the heart of the Cairngorms. The route given here stops at Ryvoan bothy, from here you can easily go south and west to Glenmore where there's a campsite at Loch Morlich.
A long article about this route will be published in one of the forthcoming Rough-Stuff Journals, titled: A Fords of Avon Brexit Hallirackit. |
